Qatar, one of the fastest growing economies in the world, is all set to make a major leap in infrastructural and development activities. In recent years, Qatar has gained attention globally by hosting two international conferences- Organisation of Islamic Summit Conference and World Trade Organisation Conference and the country is geared up to host the 15th Asian Games in December, 2006. Moreover, Qatar with its huge gas reserves in the North Fields is set to become the largest exporter of LNG in the world. The government has also set up a technopark for promoting IT in the country.
Qatar's three main industrial cities are Mesaieed in the South, Ras Laffan in the Northeast and Dukhan in the West. In addition, infrastructure has already been developed to substantially expand the existing light industrial area on the outskirts of the capital, Doha. Over the years, the country has diversified its economy and emphasis is also being placed on further small-to-medium scale private-sector industrial development. The country's first independent power and water project is being commissioned in the northern industrial city of Ras Laffan, where work is also expected to start on a private-sector aluminium smelter.
Qatar welcomes foreign participation in joint venture projects through technology supply, market administration and equity participation. The government offers several incentives for such ventures, such as low priced natural gas and electricity and the availability of industrial land at nominal rates. New investment laws allow for up to 100% foreign investment in projects related to agriculture, industry, leisure, tourism, health, education etc. Foreigners can also invest together with Qatari partners, who hold 51% interest, in all sectors except banking, insurance, commercial agencies and real estate. Qatar Industrial Development Bank has also encouraged the establishment of several small-scale industries using overseas technology.
The country is also promoting tourism in a big way. Towards meeting this end, Qatar Tourism Authority was set up in early 2002. Since then the Tourism Authority has participated in several international exhibitions and roadshows and aggressively promoted tourism in the country.
